What are the Different Types of Dentistry?

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about dentistry? For most people, it will bring up some mental images of someone cleaning their teeth or perhaps filling a cavity. Although those certainly are descriptive of someone who is called a dentist, it is really only one of the many different types of dentistry that exist. In fact, once you know the many different things that are possible with dentistry, you might never look at the practice the same way again.

The following 6 different types of dentistry will cover almost everyone who is involved in this practice. Along with the type of doctor, we will also provide a brief overview of what they do for the people under their care.

General Dentistry – This is likely what you think of when you think of a dentist. They provide dental services to people of all ages and you can typically find them practicing in your local area. Over 100,000 dentists are working in the United States.

A general dentist may help to support your general oral health through preventative services. These could include regular cleaning and x-rays. A general dentist may also perform cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening and restorative services, such as filling a cavity. This is the type of dentist that you will likely visit for any problems you may have. They may, however, refer you to one of the other types of dentists.

Oral Surgeon – These dentists also care for our oral health but they do so in a more specialized way. They must go through 4 years of dental school and then another 4 years in a residency program at the hospital. They are focused on treating the soft and hard tissues of the mouth, jaws, and face.

One of the more common procedures that are performed by an oral surgeon is to have teeth removed, such as your wisdom teeth. They may also do surgery on the jaw or on a cleft lip or palate. This type of dentist may also care for problems with obstructive sleep apnea.

Prosthodontics – This is a medical specialty associated with replacing or restoring missing teeth. They are trained specifically in this area and can really make a difference in your smile if you are having problems.

Some of the specific types of issues these dentists might be involved in include crowns, porcelain veneers, and implants. This may also be the type of dentist you visit if you are getting dentures.

Periodontal Dentist – This type of dentistry is also interested in making sure you have a nice smile but they do so by caring for your gums. They specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of issues that involve the gums and any of the underlying structures that affect the teeth. You will often be referred to a periodontal specialist by your general dentist if you are having problems.

Orthodontist – This is another type of oral specialist that is primarily focused on the correction of teeth and jaws. This would include problems when your teeth don’t close properly or if they are not quite as you would like them to be. They take the courses through a dental school and then go for additional training for a minimum of 2 years.

When most people think about an orthodontist, they think about braces. That is really only one of the different things they can do to correct crooked or imperfect teeth.

Endodontics – Many dentists will focus on what is showing on the outside of the teeth but a dentist that specializes in endodontics will look at what is under the surface. Among the different types of services they may provide are root canals. This is a common issue they treat but they may also help with other issues as well.

Most of us will only ever have to see a general dentist. They can often take care of some of the more problematic issues we may experience with our oral health. When necessary, however, they will recommend that you see a specialist and those doctors will be able to take care of what you need in a professional way.

CEREC dental machine

Important Benefits Of CEREC Dental Crowns

A revolutionary development in regards to reconstructive dentistry has to be the CEREC system, which allows for a way to create a dental crown within a day. This particular system provides a host of advantages for many patients, which makes choosing reconstructive dentistry with CEREC a really good idea.

What Is CEREC?

CEREC is one of the latest technologies which allows dental practices a way to fabricate customized restorations such as dental crowns, veneers, onlays and inlays on-site within their dental practice. Unlike like previous years whereby specifications and molds were sent to a dental laboratory, these processes are now conducted in the dental practice. This process involves the use of an advanced computer program in developing 3-dimensional specifications used for the restoration along with an extremely precise milling-machine. This means that patients can now enjoy natural looking, comfortable and beautiful restorations in just one visit.

Is CEREC Durable?

The CEREC crowns are extremely durable. Ceramic that CEREC is created out of is an extremely high-quality which ensures that patients are provided with dental work that is long-lasting.

The Necessity Of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns become necessary for a number of different reasons. Diseased and broken teeth which are unable to function optimally are able to be rebuilt with dental crowns. Crowns are similar to a type of cap which fits over the existing tooth. The crown is positioned to restore the original size and shape of the tooth. Once placed securely the crown is able to restore normal oral function, protect the damaged or diseased tooth and support the adjacent teeth.

Here are a few important benefits of the CEREC Dental Crowns:

  • Ceramic Resembles The Luster Of Natural Teeth

If you do not have an option of CEREC, you may have to settle for composite restorations. This may be a suitable restoration, but tooth enamel is actually a natural type of ceramic. What this means is that nothing is able to provide the translucency, depth, and luster that ceramic can.

  • Not Just A Crown

Although CEREC is mainly associated with creating dental crowns in one day, CEREC is used by many dentists for a variety of other restorations. CEREC is used to create porcelain veneers, particularly for broken veneers or a chipped tooth. This system is also widely used for tooth-colored fillings like porcelain onlays or inlays.

  • Can Be Used For Dental Implants

The CEREC crowns are not only used to position crowns over natural teeth. They are also frequently used for making crowns for dental implants. This option is extremely useful when a crown has broken or chipped from one of your dental implants. The implant itself is designed to last a lifetime, but the crowns usually don’t. CEREC offers a way to have these crowns replaced without having to walk around with a gap in your teeth.

  • The Best Color Match

The CEREC blocks are available in over 10 shades, which allow the dentists to achieve the best color match when compared to more traditional restoration options. Color matches are just as good from what is achieved from lab-based restorations. Many dentists agree that the CEREC system is even better as each restoration can be custom-stained during a try-in in order to ensure the optimal color match.

  • Digital Impressions

While the more modern materials used for impressions are far better than the traditional plaster impressions, they are still messy and uncomfortable. These are also complex to get right when the patient is asked to bite down, or when a technician or dentist is slightly fumble-fingered. Digital impressions are not subjected to errors that are commonly associated with the manual impressions.

  • Great Performance

The CEREC restorations offer outstanding performance when compared to a variety of other types of dental restorations.

  • Effective And Safe

Ceramic crowns are extremely safe and do not contain harmful toxic materials such as mercury.

  • Crowns While You Wait

One of the biggest benefits of the CEREC crowns is that dentists are now able to achieve restorations for their patients in a single visit. This eliminates the need for temporary crowns and making a second appointment along with the potential sensitivity and the restrictions that traditional crowns usually involve.

Where To Get CEREC Dental Crowns?

Many local dental practices now provide same-day dental crowns using the CEREC system. You can get CEREC tooth crowns at a local dentist. To find out more information check out CEREC updates to learn more!

Dentist working on man's teeth with gingivitis

The Definition Of Gingivitis And How To Guard Against It

For reasons entirely unclear, the United States tends to treat dental health as completely different from other forms of medical care. This leads to many people performing less dental upkeep than they do other forms of self-care. And people already ignore potentially life-threatening illnesses, so you can imagine what happens to their teeth!

It doesn’t help that gingivitis is an easy problem to have, and not always easy to get rid of.

What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a widely discussed topic in dentistry and oral hygiene, yet it is often a bit hard to define. The easiest definition is that gingivitis is an inflammation of the tissues that make up the human gums. An inflammation is even harder to define in simple terms, but it is essentially a swelling that occurs in response to irritating stimuli. With an inflammation, the body removes the cause of cell injuries, purges dead cells and tissues damaged and initiates the body’s natural healing factor.

While this sounds perfectly good for damaged gums, the fact is that regular cases of inflammation can cause multiple long-term problems. The most common form of gingivitis is a response to bacteria growing on the teeth themselves. You’re likely familiar with this phenomena, it’s commonly known as plaque. It tends to show up as white or off-white “gunk” that rests along the bottom of your gum-line right next to each tooth. This form of gingivitis is called plaque-induced gingivitis. Other forms of gingivitis do exist, though most of them have plaque build-up as a symptom. When the body tries to purge and heal this damage, the human gums are not actually capable of healing this damage. Instead of healing this damage, the inflammation process can lead to bleeding or pain, but if left unattended for long enough, can lead to a condition known as periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a fairly serious condition that can be a serious hazard to gums and teeth alike. When gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, the inflammation starts destroying the gum tissue that holds teeth in place. It doesn’t take long from that point to become bone resorption, which is basically the disintegration of bone tissue down to base elements. Once this process proceeds too far, tooth loss is inevitable, leading to both painful dental care bills and the frightening process of tooth loss.

Tips For Dealing With Gingivitis

With this in mind, keeping one’s gums from sinking into gingivitis is a good idea. The best way to handle this process is through good and consistent oral hygiene. Brushing one’s teeth is essential as it leads to around 70 percent of all plaque being removed, cutting off the source of most forms of gingivitis. Brushing one’s teeth should be done at least twice a day (after waiting at least twenty minutes after each meal rather than doing so immediately) and toothbrushes should regularly be changed when they get flattened by use. Using the same toothbrush for too long tends to lessen its effectiveness by quite a bit, so toothbrushes should be changed around once a month or every two months at the longest.

Flossing is essential to preventing gingivitis as well. Flossing after brushing is the best time to do it and should absolutely be done at the same time rather on its own. If you have something stuck between your teeth, then flossing without brushing may be a good idea. Even after that, a second round of flossing right after brushing your teeth is a good idea.

Finally, a good effective mouthwash should be used during each session of oral hygiene, not just to improve the scent of one’s breath, but to remove the last vestiges of plaque. After doing all three of these tasks, the teeth will have so little plaque that there is no real danger of gum disease setting in.

This is unlikely to be new information. Every child is told that they need to brush and floss as they grow up. And it doesn’t help that some dental issues are genetic. Brushing and flossing simply won’t help when it’s written in your DNA.

But if you take care of your oral hygiene and get regular dental check-ups, then you’re liable to have healthy teeth for a long time to come.

Your Smile Can Have An Effect On Your Dating Life

If you are trying to get into dating, then your smile has a lot to do with how other people feel about you. With a smile that is missing teeth or that has other issues, you can expect to date fewer people. The good news is you can get dental work done so you can look your best.

You’re going to find that people form an opinion about you almost immediately when they see you. If you’re trying to date someone and your smile has problems like dark or missing teeth, then you can expect them to have a lower opinion of you. It’s not really that people are shallow, it’s just that nature wired people to look into dating only the most attractive people they can find. Of course, not everyone is going to judge you based on your smile so not all is lost if you haven’t made it to a dentist in a while.

The dentist you pick out is going to need to be affordable for you. If you want to start dating, then you should start getting checkups at the dentist regularly. It’s important that you pick out a place that is within your price range whether you have insurance or not. There are also credit based companies you can work with that will help you get dental care if you pay them back over time. The dentist may even have a payment plan in place you can work with so you can get services without paying a bunch up front.

You’re going to want to find out about getting dentures if you have a mouth full of teeth that can’t be fixed. This can be an easy way to make a smile shine because it will basically look perfect. Of course, you have to learn to wear them and can’t just assume that having them will lead to the end of your problems. Finding a dentist that knows what they are doing is important. It’s especially important that you find out how long you’ll have to go without teeth because you do have to heal. Some places do offer immediate dentures, however.

If you have an emergency and need a tooth fixed because it broke or is infected, make sure you find an emergency dentist. You want someone that can be open at all hours to you during times when you really need help. If you have a bad enough infection, you may want to go to the hospital to get medications for it so it doesn’t spread. But, you should be able to find an emergency dentist in most areas as long as you look into when different places are open and what they offer.

Read reviews on the dental professionals in your area. You want to know that they are capable of making your smile attract people to you. When you have work done on your teeth, you may be given a treatment plan that you have to follow. If you are told not to smoke or do other things, for instance, then you need to avoid that or you may have to take another trip to the dentist. There are a lot of people that don’t really pay close attention to their teeth, and they end up losing them as a result.

You may have a hard time finding a good dentist if you don’t have a lot of money or any kind of insurance. The good news is that there are dental schools that you can visit where you can get work done at a discounted rate. The people doing the work are generally watched over by people that are more skilled, so you don’t have to worry about them making any big mistakes. You may also be able to find a dentist in another country if you have a lot of work that you need to be done in the near future.

Now that you know more about how your smile impacts your dating life, you can get the help you need with yours. There are a lot of dentists out there right now looking to help people that are willing to pay.
